The Archdale Baronets
The Archdale Baronetcy, of Riversdale, County Fermanagh, was created in 1928 for the Right Honourable Edward Mervyn Archdale (1853-1943), DL, MP for Tyrone and Fermanagh between 1921-29. The 1st Baronet was the first Minister of Agriculture, and of Commerce, in the original Stormont Government.
Vice-Admiral Sir Nicholas, CBE (1881-1955), 2nd Baronet, distinguished himself in the Royal Navy, particularly as naval Aide-de-Camp to His late Majesty King George VI in 1929; and as Inspector-General under the Ministry of Home Affairs of NI, 1931-46.
Captain Sir Edward "Ted", DSC RN, 1921-2009, 3rd Baronet, also distinguished himself in the Royal Navy , serving as aide-de-camp to HM The Queen prior to his retirement in 1971. In retirement the 3rd Baronet lived at Comber, County Down.
The 4th and present Baronet, Sir Nicholas Edward, was born in 1965.
This branch of the Archdale family lived at Crock na Crieve and also Riversdale, in County Fermanagh. Crocknacrieve, near Enniskillen, is a Georgian house originally owned by the Richardsons of Rich Hill. It was acquired by the Archdales through marriage by a cousin. Sir Edward, 1st Baronet, sold the property in 1901. Riversdale House was formerly the nucleus of a large, 5,627 acre estate. It is now the regional office for the NI Rivers Agency.
I have written about the Castle Archdale Estate here.
