John Archdale emigrated to New England, U.S.A., arriving in 1664 with his brother-in-law Ferdinando Gorges. He returned home, to England arriving in 1674. He became a Quaker. He emigrated to North Carolina, U.S.A., arriving in 1686 and became a Lor d Proprietor of the colony. He held the office of Commissioner of Gorges in the Maine government from 1687 to 1688. He held the office of Governor of North Carolina between 1695 and 1697. He returned to England. He was elected to the office of Memb er of Parliament (M.P.) for High Wycombe in 1698, but he was deprived of his seat on refusing the oath. He published the book Descriptions of Carolina in 1707.
